What is the essence of democracy? It is the rule of the people in the best sense where the government along with its agents is ever accountable to the populace. However, except this there are also several other aspects and one of them is to preserve the interest of the nation, alias the interest of the people above all. This definitely throws a light on the personal conducts of the Members of Parliament and also states the need of the ideal one. Now the question remains, as far as the democratic culture of India is concerned, whether there is any such conduct! In fact, there have been scores of incidents that have proved the indecorum and ignobility of the Indian MPs. The latest of this have been the gross demeanor of the Rajya Sabha (Upper House) MP Abdul Wahab. This incident has brought to the fore, again, the lack of decency and suave political culture and its gradual degeneration. The entire row erupted when the concerned pilot of the plane Abdul Wahab was destined to travel refused to take him since there was an unnecessary delay by the MP. This has not only exposed the true disposition of the MP but has also brought difficulty for the pilot Captain Rajat Rana, since the supporters of the very MP have already threatened him with dire consequences.
However, the only optimism is that the pilot guild has not taken the incident lying down and is also ready to go to any level for justice. The way the MP has termed Captain Rana as 'a glorified driver' has ignited it at the highest extent. They are simply keeping no stone unturned to blacklist Wahab by contacting the US Department of Homeland Security, which if done will prevent the MP from entering US. They will also apply to IFALPA for a sturdy action like preventing Wahab to travel in any airlines in the world if he fails to apologize.
It is better to note that no flight should be held up except for cases pertaining to national security and humanitarian grounds. But it doesn’t bother a responsible MP (?) like Abdul Wahab. Lastly, the Central Government is in a quandary, since they are hesitant to take any such step of castigating the very MP. It is sure that an impotent government with a namby-pamby legacy can’t take any strong step.
