While being on my spiritual journey to India, I also wanted to explore the famous monasteries of India. I heard about the very famous monasteries of Ladakh which are the main attraction for tourists to visit the beautiful valley of Ladakh. With huge excitement I reached Ladakh and found it was amusing.

Ladakh had a very eye pleasing scenic beauty with its magnificent monasteries. I found the monasteries of Ladakh located in an isolated area away from the routine life. People specially visit these monasteries as they find peaceful atmosphere and calm air.

There were many monasteries and Buddhist Gompas which signified that the reigning religion of Ladakh was Buddhism. Some of the world greatest monasteries are also present there. I saw many of them but I would like to mention a few of them which I thought were really incredible.

Hemis Gompa: Hemis Gompa is not only the biggest but also the wealthiest monasteries of Ladakh. I found the Hemis monastery quite different from many other monasteries of Ladakh. It also has a very rich collection of ancient relics. The Hemis Festival is the main festival of Hemis Gompa, which is held for 2 days in the month of June-July. It’s actually the birth anniversary of Guru Padmasambhava and during this festival they display the thangka of the monastery.

Phyang Monastery: The monastery of Phyang is consecutively recreated and has many holy places situated in the monastery complex. I visited all these places and also came through some superb paintings that were painted in the royal period as well as adorning the monastery. I was also very much attracted towards the 900 years old museum which consisted many weapons and firearms.

Even after seeing many monasteries like the Chemrey Gompa, Shey Gompa, Stongde Gompa, Bardan Monastery, Rangdum Gompa and Likir Gompa many more were remaining. I found it very amazing to see all different monasteries, each with a different theme and culture. One thing that is very necessary while taking a trip to these monasteries is you have to carry a torch with you. This is because many parts of the monastery lack in adequate amount of sunlight.
I loved trekking in Ladakh as this was the only way to reach the monasteries of Ladakh that was situated in remote areas. My trip to India for seeing the spirituality here was a great success and at the end of the journey I was very satisfied that I had fulfilled my dreams of seeing the best spiritual places of India. I thought spirituality lies in each and every corner of India!
